Pedro's Term Presentation

Pedro's presentation consisted of P2P file sharing. What is p2p file sharing? P2P file sharing is the sharing of copyrighted and non-copyrighted material through personal computers which become servers. All users provide uploading files so there is no single file. As persons complete downloading these files they share these files with new users. As a result, p2p becomes a community based on information sharing. Moreover, Pedro addresses the issue of copyright infringement which is the unauthorized use of copyrighted material. In addition, he also presented the case of Pirate Bay which was charge for copyright infringement. As a result, the Pirate Bay website was shutdown and was sued.
I think Pedro's research project was really good. He explained the definition of P2P file sharing. He showed both views of the persons in favor and the persons against p2p file sharing. I liked the way that Pedro presented the information since it was unique. I really enjoyed the fact that Pedro included an interview of the founders of the Pirate Bay bittorrent site. Overall, the presentation was really good.

My Research Project

My research project talks about the social impact of E-commerce. E-commerce stands for electronic commerce which generally consist of buying and selling products over the Internet as well as other computer networks. Many people are unaware that credit cards, online banking, and ATM machines relate to e-commerce. E-commerce includes three business models which are B2B, B2C, and C2C. B2B (business-to-business) consist of businesses buying or selling goods and services to each other. In the B2C (business-to-consumer) model the businesses sell to all consumers. Thanks to e-commerce the C2C (consumer-to-consumer) model was introduced to the world. Consumers are now able to buy and sell products and services to one another. One website that concentrates on this business model is eBay. This website helps consumers sell their products to other consumers. Moreover, e-commerce has many effects on society. E-commerce has made it easier for people to shop. It is more convenient to shop at home at any time. In addition, it is much easier to find the precise product that you are looking for. One major concern about e-commerce is the issue of identity theft. People are afraid that their personal information might be use by hackers or credit card companies. E-commerce may continue to expand in the many years to come.

Baruch New Media - Our Class Wiki - So Far

Well, a contribution that I have done on the class wiki is that I added a post that explains the technology of mp3 files. I briefly explained how the mp3 files have made it easier for people to exchange music. In addition, I explained how the music industry is being affected by these files. One thing that I would like to expand is one of the post of the importance of itunes. I would like to add content explaining a new way on how the itunes store is distributing its music to consumers. Moreover, I am doing some research on how technology is helping the music industry create high quality sound tracks. In addition, how this new technology is helping everyone to be great singers.

The Next New Thing

One thing that I hate when it comes to typing a paper is the fact that you have to carry your laptop around or sit on a computer for a long time. Time is a big issue when it comes to typing a paper. Most students have jobs that make it difficult for them to work on their papers. These particular students only have spare time while they are using public transportation. Now, it is rare for students to take out their laptops while they are commuting to school or work. One great idea in which students can do their school work while they are commuting is by introducing a mobile application similar to Microsoft Word. Students can then type their work on their cellphones and transfer it to their computers. This application would also include features like check spelling, format settings, fonts and much more. As technology improves, this application is more likely to be created. In my case, this application would be the greatest tool.

Advice To Baruch College

If I was hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the College I would suggest the use of podcasts. The professors would record their lectures and would post them on blackboard. This idea would be a good help tool for students to do well on their classes. With just a simple download students can then put them on their ipods and listen to the lecture while they are on the subway. In addition, the creation of an automatic system that would inform students about the cancellation of a class would also be of great help. The way in which this system would inform the students would be via mobile technology. Students would receive all the information on their mobile devices. These are my basic suggestions to improve Baruch College.

Old VS New

"New" media and "Old" media are similar to one another but are very different. Old media is a form of media which is static. This type of media can be best represented by books, magazines, newspapers, television, music and photography. Old media makes it difficult for any person that does not belong to any media company to be heard. The internet made a great contribution to the creation of what is known as new media. New media is the transformation of existing media which in this case is old media (Friedman). The characteristics of new media consists of the 5 C's which are communication, collaboration, community, creativity, and convergence (Friedman). New media has made it easier for any person to spread his or her word. Now what would new media be called ten or twenty years from today?

Modeling Reality With Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are representations of reality (Friedman). The use of virtual worlds can extend from simple creativity to sophisticated corporate use. One good way in which big corporations are using virtual worlds is by integrating them to their personnel training. Virtual worlds may help new employees prepare with simulated real life situations. As stated by IBM vice president Ted Hoff, "[New IBM employees] can learn real-life working skills such as signing up for benefits, developing code as part of a global team, and ramping up sales skills before they meet with IBM clients” (Frauenheim). Moreover, virtual worlds can help poeple with different health problems such as autism. Poeple with autism can go into virtual worlds and interact with other people which in real life it is difficult for them to do so (Saidi). As Volkmar states, "there is clearly considerable potential in use of new technologies for fostering social skills" which in this case virtual worlds (Saidi). The benefits of using this technology is that it can greatly increase communication skills which are essential in the work place and life in general. In addition, this technology can expand different ways on how to treat patients with certain disorders that prevent them from socializing with different people.
